I don’t believe in guilty pleasures--If you enjoy something, there’s no reason to hide it from people who are surely concealing their own vices-- thus I’m unafraid to defend my fondness for VH1’s top-rated series Love & Hip Hop Atlanta from the faux Negro Intelligentsia. As a critical consumer of media, I never just let the images I see wash over me. I analyze and dissect them until there’s nothing left to reflect upon.

As the show becomes fodder for hushed workplace conversations and impassioned text and email exchanges, scores of Black women are similarly dissecting and discussing the show. LHHA illuminates destructive trends that occur in Black communities, and now is an unmissable opportunity to discuss them openly.

I did not discover the transformative power of sisterhood until I entered college. There I found a group of Black women in whom I could confide and depend. Knowing them centered me in my own womanhood. I saw myself in their gorgeous reflections and their radiant power. They were smart, funny, and fly. I was because they were. My sisters. My soulmates.

Black Twitter has become a haven for those who delight in tearing down Black women for the slightest perceived flaw, but if you're a woman who dares go against the group of "Black Twitter Elite" (read: unabashed misogynists with lots of followers) you can expect to be torn to shreds by men and women desperately seeking validation. Just the other day my girlfriend called me very distraught about a situation that had happened between her and a man that she had been dating. He pursued her very aggressively and they have been seeing each other for about two months, talking on the phone or going out on a daily basis.

She talked with us about her blogging journey. 

Over the years I have gathered a few mentors in my head. Some of these women I have met and some I have admired from a distance. Susan Fales-Hill is definitely one of these mentors. I first learned of Mrs. Fales-Hill from an article in Essence, that was highlighting her first book "Always Wear Joy". I was enthralled by this woman and her mother, Josephine Premice. Being of Haitian descent, as they are, I wanted to know more about them. What their journeys have been like, what lessons they wish to teach others, and just how they have maintained their glamor and endearing aura in a world that doesn't always appreciate such traits. I ran to my local Barnes and Nobles and purchased the last copy of this book (that I still own to this day). Since then, I have remained a fan and supporter of Mrs. Fales-Hill. Last week, I had the amazing opportunity to interview her and talk about her new book, "Imperfect Bliss." I must say she is just as gracious, intelligent, and heart-warming as I imagined...and more.

Most of us were taught as children that “bitch” is a bad word. In fact, it was one of the worst of the dirty words. If a man called a woman a bitch, then he had really crossed the line that time. In recent years, the term has become more accepted, not only as a term for women in general, but as a term of both offense and endearment between women.
