Trans Woman in Texas Killed in Possible Hate Crime

Ty Underwood, a 24-year-old transgender woman, was the victim of a suspected hate crime shooting that took place in North Tyler, Texas on Monday.

Detectives believe that Underwood was in or close to her car when the attack began. In an effort to escape the shooter(s), she drove away but soon collided with a telephone pole.

Coy Simmons, Underwood’s roommate and close friend, is certain that Underwood was not the victim of a random shooting but was targeted specifically for her transgender identity.
“This has to be a hate crime, this has to be a hate crime, nothing else because that was an upstanding person with a good heart,” Simmons said.

Underwood worked as a nursing assistant and was recently accepted into Kilgore College's nursing program.

In light of continued acts of terrorism against gender minorities of color, it is vital that we stand in solidarity with our transgendered sisters and brothers. #BlackTransLivesMatter
